Would you like to remove a website from Google Analytics? Deleting unnecessary websites will clean up your Google Analytics profile especially if you're tracking many different properties or websites on your account. In this tutorial, we'll explain how to delete a website from Google Analytics.

Understanding Analytics Hierarchy

Deleting a website from a Google Analytics profile can be intimidating especially for beginners. Removing the wrong data from your profile will stop tracking your website visitors. And if the data is not retrieved, you'll permanently lose the historical data associated with your website.

Before we dive into remove your site, let's take a quick look at the hierarchy of your Analytics profile. Understanding it helps you make sure that you don't accidentally delete the wrong data from your profile.

Your Analytics profile consists of 3 different components. They are account, property and view.

  • Account: You should have at least one account to access the analytics report.
  • Property: A property can be a website or a mobile app that you'd like to track in Google Analytics.
  • View: A view is the access point for your reports. For example, within a property you can have different views for viewing all the data for example.com, viewing only a specific subdomain, like blog.example.com or viewing only AdWords traffic.

Your Analytics profile can have multiple accounts.

Each account can have multiple properties and each property can have many views. Take a look the illustration below.

Which One Should You Delete? Account, Property or View

If you want to remove all the data of your website, you may remove the property.

If an account contains only a property which you'd like to remove, you may remove the account as well along with the property.

If you want to remove only a specific view, like a subdomain or AdWords traffic, you may remove the view.

How to Remove a Website from Google Analytics

First, log into your Google Analytics profile and select the website you'd like to remove from your Analytics account.

Then click Admin in the left taskbar.

Now you'll see the Administration page.

In the Administration page, you can remove an account, property or view according to your needs.

How to Delete a Google Analytics Account

To remove an account, click Account Settings in the Account column in your Administration page.

Then click Move to Trash Can.

Note: Depending on your geographic location, the button might say "Move to Rubbish Bin" instead.

In the next page, click the Trash account button.

How to Delete a Google Analytics Property

To remove a property, click Property Settings in the Property column in your Administration page.

Then click Move to Trash Can. In the next page, click the Trash property button.

How to Delete a Google Analytics View

To remove a property, click View Settings in the View column in your Administration page.

Then click Move to Trash Can. In the next page, click the Trash view button.

You've successfully removed a site from Google Analytics.

The data will be permanently deleted 35 days after being moved to the trash can. After that, you won't be able to retrieve any historical data or reinstate your reports.
